An arm lift Is an effective way to reduce the appearance of “bat wings” that often develop on the upper arm as a result of weight loss, gravity or the aging process. This surgical procedure removes excess fat and skin from the arm between the elbow and the shoulder, resulting In a leaner, more youthful appearance. Arm lifts are typically the best way to restore the slender contour of the upper arm when diet and exercise do not achieve the desired results.
Who’s it For?
An arm lift, also referred to as a brachioplasty, can be used to address the following concerns:
Sagging skin on the underside of the upper arm due to skin laxity
Excess pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise
Excess skin as a result of dramatic weight loss
This procedure is usually recommended for San Diego patients in good health who do not smoke and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. Arm lifts do require an incision on the underside of the arm between the elbow and the armpit, so patients must be willing to trade a scar for the appearance of leaner, younger arms. Arm lifts may be performed alone or in combination with other procedures like liposuction or abdominoplasty.
Dr. Kaweski performs arm Lifts at La Mesa Surgical Center as an outpatient procedure. Depending on the amount of tissue and skin to be removed, the procedure may be done under general or local anesthesia The incision is placed on the underside of the upper arm where it will be less visible after surgery.
If needed, liposuction may be used during the arm lift to remove fat cells from the area. Liposuction involves a narrow cannula inserted into the area that loosens pockets of fat so they can be removed with gentle suction. Excess skin is removed and the underlying structure of the arm is tightened before skin sutured over the area.
After the Procedure
Discomfort after an arm lift can be managed with oral pain medication. There may be bruising and swelling after the procedure, which subsides within a matter of days, A compression vest is typically worn for 4-6 weeks to reduce swelling and encourage healthy blood flow to the area. Most San Diego patients return to work and regular activities within 1-2 weeks.
What about results?
Results of an arm lift are visible right away, although full results probably won’t be apparent until healing is complete. At that time, patients should see more attractive contoured arms. The results of an arm lift are considered permanent as long as the patient maintains a healthy weight after the procedure. An arm lift can help you regain self-confidence to enjoy sleeveless fashions in your newly sculpted arms.
