Microdermabrasion is a less invasive approach to skin resurfacing than dermabrasion. This procedure uses a special handheld device that applies tiny crystals to the skin’s surface, removing outer skin cells and leaving a softer, smoother complexion underneath. The procedure is used to address more subtle skin imperfections, such as fine lines, discoloration, sun damage and uneven tone and texture. Microdermabrasion can be used on the following areas:
- Face
- Neck
- Décolleté
- Hands
- Arms
The procedure may be performed alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures, such as a chemical peel, facelift or injectable filler.
About the Procedure
Microdermabrasion is performed in the San Diego area at Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery as an outpatient procedure. A topical anesthetic might be applied prior to treatment to ensure patient comfort throughout. A small handheld device is used to blow tiny crystals across the skin. As the crystals are suctioned away, outer layers of dead, dry skin cells are removed with them. Microdermabrasion may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area.
