Women are not the only ones who struggle with the size of their breasts. For San Diego men who suffer from a condition known as gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts, the emotional and physical impact can be devastating. Men with this condition often avoid activities and intimacy with their partners because of discomfort with their bodies. Fortunately, these men may benefit from a cosmetic procedure known as breast reduction for men or gynecomastia surgery.

Who is Gynecomastia Surgery For?

Gynecomastia surgery is appropriate for men who are uncomfortable with the size of their breasts. This condition may occur for a number of reasons, including heredity, some diseases and hormonal fluctuations. The condition ranges in severity, from mild breast growth that is not overtly noticeable to major growth that resembles women’s breasts in size. Breast reduction surgery may be considered for the following reasons:

  • Enlarged breasts keeps you from participating in sports and other activities
  • You are experiencing psychological discomfort due to your breast size
  • You try to hide your body contours under baggy shirts and sweatshirts
  • You are unhappy with your overall body contour
  • You want to increase self-confidence and enhance intimate relationships

Gynecomastia surgery for men is generally performed as a single procedure. However, the procedure may be combined with other treatments, such as a tummy tuck or liposuction to achieve more dramatic results.

About the Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Dr. Kaweski performs male breast reduction surgery at an area hospital near Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery in the San Diego area. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis, usually using general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort throughout. Incisions are placed around the areola, with a vertical incision extending down the lower midsection of the breast.

Through this incision, Dr. Kaweski removes excess tissue, fat and skin repositioning the breast and nipple as needed to achieve a natural look. In some cases, liposuction may also be used to gently remove fat cells via a narrow cannula and suction device. Once the breasts are the proper size and in the proper position, incisions are sutured closed.

Recovery After the Procedure

Discomfort after breast reduction surgery is usually minimal and can be effectively managed with oral pain medication. It is normal to have a degree of bruising and swelling around the incision sites, which subsides spontaneously within a few days after the procedure. A compression garment is worn over the site for a number of days to keep the breasts in proper position and ensure full healing of the area.

What about Results?

The results of gynecomastia surgery are evident immediately after the procedure and continue to improve as the breasts heal completely. Most men in San Diego area find the results of breast reduction surgery are permanent, as long as a healthy weight is maintained after the procedure.
