A lower body lift is a surgical procedure that addresses the buttocks, thighs, hips and abdomen. The procedure may be recommended after significant weight loss, to remove excess, sagging skin and tighten the underlying structure of the lower body for a leaner, more sculpted look. A lower body lift, also known as a belt lipectomy, offers a new body contour that allows clothing to fit better and enhances a patient’s appearance after achieving a healthy weight.

Who is it For?

  • A lower body lift can address the following issues:
  • Sagging skin after weight loss or pregnancy
  • Thin, stubborn pockets of fat around the thighs, buttocks and hips
  • Overhanging skin prone to chaffing and irritation
  • Loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone due to pregnancy and aging

A lower body lift is not considered an effective method of weight loss. San Diego patients are usually counseled to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight prior to this procedure. However, small, isolated pockets of fat may be removed through this surgery, particularly when it is combined with a liposuction procedure.

About the Procedure

A lower body lift may be performed by Dr. Kaweski at Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery or a nearby hospital where Dr. Kaweski has privileges. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and often requires an overnight stay in the hospital. depending on the extent of the procedure. Incisions are typically made in the back and may be extended around the midsection to ensure minimal scarring after surgery.

During the procedure, Dr. Kaweski removes excess skin and isolated areas of fat. Underlying skin structure is tightened before skin is replaced and sutured over the area. The surgery may take 5-7 hours to perform, depending on the extent of the procedure.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, San Diego patients are often provided a pain pump to manage discomfort without the need for oral narcotics immediately following surgery. Drains are placed in the incision sites to prevent infections and fluid buildup at the surgical sites. A compression garment is usually placed over the surgical area to minimize swelling and promote healthy blood flow and healing.

What about Results?

Results of a lower body lift are apparent right away, but may not be evident to the patient until the area fully heals. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Scars will fade over the 12-24 months following surgery. The results of a lower body lift are considered permanent, although the effects of gravity and aging could result in the need for touch-up procedures at some point in the future.

A lower body lift is an extensive surgical procedure that should only be performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon. If you would like to learn more about this surgery, contact our office at Aesthetic Arts Institute in the San Diego area to schedule a consultation by calling (619) 464-9876.
