Eyelid enhancement, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that addresses signs of aging on the eyelids and around the eyes. The result can be a more youthful appearance, with eyes that look better rested and refreshed. The procedure may also be recommended for La Mesa and San Diego patients who are experiencing impaired vision as a result of drooping, sagging upper eyelids.
Who is it For?
Anyone in relatively good physical health that would like to refresh their appearance in the eye area may be a candidate for eyelid enhancement surgery. This procedure may be recommended to address the following issues:
- Tiny pockets of fat in the upper or lower lid that give the eyes a “tired” appearance
- Loose skin the interrupts the basic contour of the upper lid and impairs vision
- Bags under the eyes that make a person look chronically fatigued
- Loss of the natural upper eyelid crease
- Drooping lower eyelids that reveal the white of the eye under the iris
- Fine lines and wrinkles around the lower eyelid
About the Procedure
Dr. Kaweski performs eyelid enhancement surgery at Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery in the La Mesa and San Diego area. The operation is done on an outpatient basis, using a choice of sedation, local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Incisions are carefully placed below the lash line of the lower lid or in the crease of upper lid to minimize scarring afterward. Once the incisions are made, excess fat and skin may be removed, underlying structure is tightened and repositioned, and the skin is replaced over the lid. In some cases, fat removed from the upper lid may be placed into the lower lid to hide bags and give the lower eye a refreshed appearance. The procedure typically takes between 1-2 hours to complete, depending on whether one or both lids are addressed during surgery.
After the Procedure
Full recovery from blepharoplasty usually takes 1-2 weeks. La Mesa and San Diego patients that experience mild discomfort after the procedure may effectively manage the pain with oral medication. Bruising and swelling are common around the eyes after blepharoplasty and subside within a week or two.
What about Results?
Results of eyelid enhancement surgery become evident once the swelling and bruising subside – within 1-2 weeks. If excess skin on the upper eyelid is removed to eliminate hooding, the results of that procedure are usually permanent. Other results from blepharoplasty are also long-lasting, although the effects of aging may require a touch-up procedure after many years.
