Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Indications:

  • Ears that sick out too far from the side of the head

Description of Procedure:

  • The operation is performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia.
  • The ears are usually bandaged with a cotton dressing that wraps around the head for 1-2 days.
  • A small drain from each ear is removed the day after surgery without disturbing the head dressing.
  • Initial mild post-operative discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication.
  • The procedure is appropriate beginning at age 5 or 6 or at anytime thereafter.

Intended Result:

  • Ears that have normal folds and shape with average protrusion from the side of the head.

Recuperation and Healing:

  • The ears usually look “normal” within 10-20 days.
  • Usually a headband is worn at night to protect the ears for at least one month.
